My Name is Louis and I'm an Alcoholic

"We love you, Louis."

Actually my grandfather was an alcoholic. I say "was" because he's no longer residing on the planet. My father is a teetotaler; he joined the Church when I was 2 or 3 and has been non-stop Mormon man ever since. He had to learn the lesson of not controlling every single move his kids made the hard way, and I bore the brunt of that, but he has done better than most with the tools he has or had to work with. There were times he was abusive, loud, and domineering, but in retrospect and with the spectacles of adulthood I now wear I see he wasn't doing it out of non-love. Whatever. It is what it is.

Now. I think the sixties (hippie culture) really jacked things up. I wasn't there, but I caught the tail-end residuals of the shallowness of that counterculture. I also feel the sixties abused alot of possible good, such as medications. Which leads me to this.

Working in medicine, I have felt oftentimes there are things people use that are crazy. Inotropics, blood-pressure medicines, acetominophen, these drugs have narrow therapeutic ranges, and anything outside of those ranges are potentially dangerous. I got into nursing to prepare for med school, but I sometimes wonder if medicine is controlled by pharmaceutical companies...? Why not herbal remedies? Think of this: if there was not such a negative social stigma attached to LSD, mushrooms, or marijuana (these are examples), what good could come from its usage? Another double-standard: all the nurses I work with swear up and down about how stupid marijuana is, yet they always talk of the bars and getting wasted. I don't use any of this (I keep the Word of Wisdom) but I'm open for medicinal usage of certain drugs.

Stupid hippies...

Okay, some quick thoughts before I have to go pick up my daughter.
I do think that medicine is certainly influenced by drug companies. They are making sooo much money it is sad. When I think about how that money gets WASTED by bringing doctor's offices lunches a couple times a week, by giving people 2000$ rent allowances, and on and on and on. They could pour that money into even more research, giving every child in Africa every vaccine s/he will need, every HIV drug. Okay, calming down....
Herbal remedies--all for them, but so far, I don't think that pot has been shown to reduce mood disorders, except perhaps in the (subjective) eye of the disordered individual.
Naltrexone has just been made into a monthly shot. Guess how much they are charging for it? 700$ a shot, and the shot lasts 1 month. Now who do you think is going to be getting that drug, and who it is being marketed to? Exactly--doctors, lawyers, and such. All the highly paid people who are addicted to alcohol and prescription drugs. So yes, I agree that many people, and not just in the medical profession are oblivious to how their alcohol use is unhealthy.
Have you ever tried St. John's Wort, or been to a homeopath?

No, to St. John's Wort or homeopath. I have no time right now. I have only one day off of work a week, pretty much, and I'm so tired, I'm useless. I graduate in May '07 and I'll just work. I want to take a few months of just working before I pursue any treatment modalities. On the herbs, that's just it. I'm going to research Naltrexone. $700? I rented a nice house for $800 a month. That's crazy. I don't think pot 'cures' anything, but in past reference it does takes the edge off. I'm happy with it's legal status right now, but I'm not closed to the idea of legalization. I hope I don't sound like any trendy goatee knit-wool-cap-in-the-summertime kid...I'm functioning, but highly annoyed.

On another note, I quit going to Church last week for the winter, but decided this a.m. to go to antagonize people. Not to be a punk, but just to shake things up a little. Sunday School, not Sacrament. ? Has Shazzy, um, destroyed the abominable JT cd yet?

I read somewhere that seeing our parents as good is important to a person's well-being. I have been open about the hard times in my life on various blogs. I do really believe that both of my parents are good and both of them love me. I questioned this at one time and am glad for experiences that have helped me come to a greater realization.

In regards to prescription meds, it is scary how doctors get so many junkets and free meals from pharm companies and also how little most of them know about vitamins. My family is on the highest discount at our health food store due to how much we spend. :)

Naltrexone is an opioid receptor antagonist used primarily in the management of alcohol dependence and opioid dependence, so I don't think it would do you much good. :) But, just think! $700 a pop (in the gluteus maximus!).
Well, next summer, when you're ready, my cousin is in Houston, and she's an LCSW, too, and she works with a couple shrinks. So that could be a place to start? Aren't you at Hermann? I'm guessing you have decent benefits--maybe there's someone on campus you could go see on a lunch hour or something?
No-he hasn't gotten rid of JT, yet. He says you're just jealous that you can't get over your inhibitions and learn to love it like any other piece of music, and there really is some good synth stuff on it (isn't he so hoity toity;))
I think most mo's can use a little shaking every now and again.

Hey, tell Shazzy the 'good synth stuff' is a rip-off of Benny Benassi, and Italian DJ. Justin Timberlake is a puppet for the label he's on. The label is telling him what to sing, writing his lyrics, and sampling other peoples' creativity. I'm all for sampling, but give credit where it's due. I be JT has never even heard of Benassi! Ha! JT is the modern day Motown.

Barb, what a profound comment. I think that can make a lot of difference in one's psyche.

I love Soma and Xanax, but I don't take them. I'd probably love meth and crack, as well.

I used to say that the feeling you get when you're high could be a substitute for feeling heaven's love. But now I don't know about that.

The other day, Bill and I were watching TV and somebody had smoked marijuana and they were laughing, oh yeah, it was a re-run of Sex and the City, and Bill asked, "have you ever smoked marijuana?" (we've only been married 24 + years, he doesn't know me well yet). He proceeded to say, "it's just like that, everything is funny." But I wonder. Because he says he was a happy drunk, too, so maybe it just had that affect on him.

Just a quick hi. What's the latest?

Say no--as long as the stoners aren't driving, I'd say you're probably right--I don't think they drive any better than anyone who is drunk--eiher way, response time is delayed.

No. No to drugs. All of them. But, yes, society plays a huge role in our level of acceptance.
